You move a wooden chair and find a tiny heap of fine, flour-like powder underneath. Look closer and there are small round holes in the wood. That is the classic sign of wood borer beetles. This guide explains wood borer treatment in Indore, how to tell borers apart from termites, and how to protect your furniture, doors and wooden fittings.
What is a wood borer?
“Wood borer” is a common name for several beetles whose larvae live inside wood and feed on it for months, sometimes years. The adult beetle lays eggs in cracks or pores of the wood. The larvae hatch, tunnel through the wood, and finally emerge as adults through small round exit holes. Those holes and the powder (called frass) that falls out of them are what most people notice first.
Seasoned wood, plywood, old furniture bought second-hand and wooden items stored in damp rooms are all at risk.
Wood borer vs termite: how to tell the difference
Many Indore homeowners call us about “termites” when the problem is actually wood borer, and the other way round. The treatment is different, so it matters.
- Holes: wood borer leaves neat round exit holes on the surface. Termites rarely make visible holes.
- Powder: borers leave fine, dry powder. Termites leave soil-like mud and debris.
- Mud tubes: termites build mud tunnels on walls. Wood borers do not.
- Location: borers can attack furniture anywhere, even on upper floors far from the soil. Subterranean termites usually come up from the ground.
If you see mud tubes, read our guide to termite control in Indore. If you see round holes and powder, keep reading.
Signs of an active wood borer infestation
Old exit holes do not always mean the beetles are still there. Check whether the problem is active:
- Fresh, light-coloured powder appears again after you clean it.
- New holes appear over a few weeks.
- The wood feels weak or crumbles at the edges.
- You see small beetles near windows or lights, especially in warm months.
A simple trick: vacuum or wipe the area clean and check again after a week. If new powder appears, the larvae are still feeding.
How wood borer treatment in Indore works
At Ideal Pest Management, wood borer treatment follows the same Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach we use for every pest: inspection, identification, treatment and prevention.
Inspection and identification
Our technician checks the affected furniture, door frames, windows and other wooden items in the room, confirms whether it is wood borer or termite, and judges how far the damage has spread.
Targeted treatment
The affected wood is treated so that the treatment reaches the larvae inside the tunnels, not just the surface. Badly damaged pieces may need to be repaired or replaced, and we will tell you honestly if an item is beyond saving.
Prevention advice
We explain how to keep the wood dry, which items should be kept away from infested pieces, and what to check in the coming months.
You can see our full list of treatments on the services page.
Preventing wood borer at home
- Inspect second-hand furniture carefully before bringing it into the house.
- Keep wooden furniture away from damp walls, and fix leaks quickly.
- Polish or seal bare wood; finished surfaces give beetles fewer places to lay eggs.
- Do not store old wooden planks or broken furniture in the same room as good furniture.
- Check lofts, store rooms and wooden beds once or twice a year.
Which wooden items are most at risk?
In Indore homes we most often see borer damage in a few places. Wooden beds and diwans, because they are rarely moved and the underside is never checked. Old almirahs and showcases, especially those passed down in the family or bought second-hand. Door and window frames, particularly where the paint has worn off. Plywood used in older modular kitchens and wardrobes. And wooden temple units or decorative panels made from untreated softwood. If you have any of these, include them when you check for powder and holes.
When should you call a professional?
A single old hole with no fresh powder may not need treatment. But call for an inspection if fresh powder keeps appearing, if several pieces of furniture are affected, if structural wood such as door frames or beams shows damage, or if you cannot tell whether it is wood borer or termites. Treating early is usually simpler and cheaper than replacing furniture later. Our guide to pest control cost in Indore explains what affects the price of a treatment.
Why home remedies often fail
Many people try kerosene, neem oil or naphthalene balls on borer holes. These may help a little on the surface, but the larvae live deep inside the wood, often well away from the hole you can see. Surface remedies rarely reach them, so the powder returns a few weeks later. Some home remedies also leave strong smells or create a fire risk, which is not something you want on beds and cupboards.
Safety notes
Wood treatment products should be applied by trained people. Keep children and pets out of the room during treatment, cover nearby food and utensils, ventilate well afterwards and follow the technician’s advice on when furniture can be used again. Avoid applying strong chemicals yourself, especially on beds, cots and dining furniture.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can wood borer spread from one piece of furniture to another?
Yes. Adult beetles emerge and can lay eggs in other untreated wood nearby, so it is best to deal with an active infestation early.
Is wood borer the same as termite?
No. Wood borers are beetle larvae that leave round holes and fine powder. Termites live in colonies, usually come from the soil and build mud tubes.
Can damaged furniture be saved?
Often it can, if treated early. Heavily hollowed pieces may need repair or replacement, and our technician will advise after inspection.
